HARPSICHORD

ANONYMOUS, ca 1660, ITALY (POSSIBLY BOLOGNA)

This instrument also features the inner-outer construction as with the Baffo virginals, with an outer case painted dark green and a large lock on the cheek, which are thought to be contemporary to the rest of the instrument. The inner instrument case is unpainted as usual, with a square tail. Under the lid is a mid-seventeenth-century Italian landscape painting, probably of northern Italy, by an anonymous painter. The nameboard is decorated with gilt and polychrome painted lines, with three inlaid ivory diamonds in two ebony rectangles.
