Anita Graef, Cello
Join us for an evening of cello and piano featuring acclaimed cellist Anita Graef and pianist Nathan Canfield, performing a program that moves from Spanish-inflected romance to mystical, otherworldly soundscapes, and finally into the emotional depth of a Chopin sonata.
How do you experience your own life story — as one continuous narrative, or as a series of distinct chapters? This performance draws on that very question, inspired by the philosophical concepts of diachronic and episodic selfhood, and features works that embody both ways of experiencing time: some deeply narrative and story-driven, others inviting total presence in the moment.

About the Artists:
Anita Graef is an American cellist celebrated for her artistry and energy on stage, with performances spanning Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert series, and NPR. A winner of the 2022 Gheens Young Artist Award and the 2021 American Prize, she currently serves as Artistic Director of both the Tallgrass Chamber Music Festival and Chicago’s Juliani Ensemble.
Nathan Canfield is a staff pianist at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, where he collaborates frequently with musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and beyond. Alongside performing, he’s an active arranger and transcriber, currently developing new work on Rachmaninov’s lesser-known pieces.
