Brief History of the Square Piano
Thomas Strange of Easley, South Carolina provides a brief history of the square piano. In this clip, he discusses the roots of the square piano from the early clavichord. Also, two early English square pianos by Frederick Beck and John Geib, Sr. are highlighted.
Thomas Strange continues his discussion about the evolution of the square piano in England and America. Playing instruments in the Carolina Clavier Collection, Mr. Strange demonstrates an early square piano built by John Broadwood as well as an early American unichord instrument. Thomas Strange restored a William Geib square piano, which Patrick Hawkins has recorded for Navona Records. This recording, entitled “Haydn and the English Lady,” was released in November of 2014
