Educational Video Series
In 2024, Sigal Music Museum began filming principal photography for an exciting new series for children, which introduces them to the world of musical instruments. This six-part series marks the beginning of a larger series that will be produced over the next several years, using local talent and targeting local school, eventually developing into a nationwide program.
Most students in Greenville County begin taking music instrument lessons in the 4th/5th grade. Therefore, the video series is targeted for an audience of second, third, and fourth graders, to introduce them to all the possibilities when choosing an instrument. The first installment of the series offers six episodes, each no more than five minutes long.
Here’s a quick teacher’s overview from David Sims, Sigal Music Museum’s Evecutive Director.
Video 1 :: Introduction
Our hosts explore the Sigal Music Museum and discover what a Curator does by meeting Dr. Tom Strange! We also learn about the story of Marlowe Sigal, and how the collection came to be.
Video 2 :: The Saxophone
Guest artist Vee Popat, Director of the Fine Arts Center, plays the sax for our hosts, who also discover all the variations of the instrument by examining the Sigal Saxophone collection.
Video 3 :: The Flute
Dr. Caroline Ulrich visits the museum to play the flute and chat with our hosts about how to play the instrument. We also look at the history of the instrument and discover more woodwind treasures in the Sigal collection.
Video 4 :: The Trumpet
Dr. Gary Malvern visits the museum to blow his horn and talk about the history of the instrument in a variety of genres.
Video 5 :: The Oboe and Bassoon
Chelsea Russell and Allen Jiang of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra join us to share their knowledge of double reed instruments, particularly the oboe and bassoon.
Video 6 :: The Harpsichord
Curator Dr. Tom Strange returns to show us the harpsichord and how it differs from a piano. We also learn about the story of when Mozart played our Kirkman harpsichord for Queen Charlotte!

The Hosts
In order to appeal to a younger audience, Sigal Music Museum hired guest hosts from the SC Children’s Museum, who are Greenville County students themselves! In an effort to inspire the viewers to become musicians, each video features a guest artist who is a professional musician – many from the Greenville Symphony Orchestra!
To keep the videos visually exciting, we are including animation of each instrument, so the students can see inside to learn how the sound is made.
Other animations will include a few colorful characters and scenarios that will help tell these stories!
